Seven years of teamwork

As a team Sano and its partner achieve 28 weaned farrows and quick births

Pig farmer Stefan Kemper was unhappy. He was experiencing problems with the farrowing and was very concerned about it; therefore he asked Werner Daldrup (Sano Special Consultant) for help. Seven years have passed – since then the situation has become a lot better: the company proudly counts 28 weaned farrows.

Status Quo

From the middle of the 70s Werner and Elisabeth Kemper have been building their agricultural family business in Ahaus – Alstätte (administrative district of Borken). Today family Kemper farms 58 hectare. The pigpen consists of 350 sows with the breeding of piglets. The breeding sows are the responsibility of the son and manager Stefan Kemper. He has been responsible for the management of the business for about ten years now. Mother Elisabeth supports him with the work in the farrowing pen. The 80 Simmental cows (a shed with an average of 9.000 kg) and their calves are managed by father Werner.

Successful teamwork for seven years

About seven years ago Stefan Kemper was experiencing problems with the farrowing and was unhappy. He discussed the situation with the Sano Special Consultant Werner Daldrup who already helps with the feeding of the cows. They had a closer look at the feed situation. It wasn’t possible to implement a special pre-birth feed, so they decided to look at the feed for the pregnant sows as well as a feed solution for the birth phase.

High birth weights

From the 85th day of the pregnancy the sows start gaining a lot of weight in the uterus. From then on the daily feed ration is increased to an energy level of a maximum of 43 MJ ME per sow. Thereafter the sows receive between 3.5 to 4 kg of feed per day. “Since we implemented the new measurements Werner Daldrup has recommended to us, the birth weights and the number of farrows born alive clearly increased.” In order to support the birth process and also for the vitality of the sows and farrows, Stefan Kemper uses Stabilosan® with 5 kg per ton of feed. “The birth process is faster and the sows need less assistance during birth”, says the pig farmer.

Five-week-rhythm

Stefan Kemper works in a rhythm of five weeks with 28 days of lactation. His aim is to sell the farrows in sections of 500. The farmer is happy with the latest performance results. “The milk yield of the sows has improved and this is especially noticeable through the excellent vitality of the piglets.” , explains feeding expert Daldrup.

Additional farrow milk

He currently uses the product SanAmmat F® in the farrowing pen for an additional milk supply of the farrows. “I like the good solubility of the milk powder. I can use it very well with my cup system and it keeps its structure. The intake of the farrows is also very good”, the farrow producer depicts his observations. After about 14 days he starts to feed the weaning feed.

Excellent improvements

The improvements due to the Sano Feeding Concept have been noticeable immediately. The return to service dropped from 14% to 8%. The sows don’t get any food on the day of weaning, they only receive water. Then they get 4.2 kg of feed. Afterwards the sows receive the feed individually and according to their body condition for the next 21 days. Once they fall pregnant, they will be moved to a new barn, the so called waiting room. Sano Special Consultant Werner Daldrup calculates the feed ration for the sows and farrows. A retailer in Vreden then mixes it and delivers it to Stefan Kemper.

Results

“I am very happy about the cooperation with Sano and Werner Daldrup. My revenue has increased and so has my performance. ”, says Stefan Kemper about the successful partnership.
